Cheap Talk, Monitoring and Collusion
نویسندگان
چکیده
Many collusive agreements involve the exchange of self-reported sales data between competitors, which use them to monitor compliance with a target market share allocation. Such communication may facilitate collusion even if it is unverifiable cheap talk and underlying information becomes publicly available delay. The allow firms implement incentive-compatible reallocation mechanisms after unexpected swings, limiting recourse price wars. earn profits that could not be earned in any collusive, symmetric pure-strategy equilibrium without communication.

Attracting Attention: Cheap Managerial Talk and Costly Market Monitoring∗
This paper provides a theory of informal communication (cheap talk) between firms and the capital market. The theory emphasizes the central role that agency conflicts play in firms’ disclosure policies. Since managers’ information is a consequence of their actions, incentive compensation and information disclosure become two intrinsically linked aspects of corporate governance. In the model, th...

متن کاملSelecting Cheap-Talk Equilibria∗
There are typically multiple equilibrium outcomes in the Crawford-Sobel (CS) model of strategic information transmission. This paper identifies a simple condition on equilibrium payoffs, called NITS, that selects among CS equilibria. Under a commonly used regularity condition, only the equilibrium with the maximal number of induced actions satisfies NITS. We discuss various justifications for N...

We consider a model in which there is uncertainty over when a one-shot game will be played. We show how a mechanism designer can implement desirable outcomes in certain economic games by manipulating only the probability that the game is played in a given round while leaving all other aspects of the game unchanged. We also show that if there is no discounting, this uncertainty imparts a sequent...
